Ransomware: What is it & How to prevent it!

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a form of malicious software that prevents or blocks access to a victim’s personal data and holds it hostage until a ransom is paid. Usually threats of deleting your data or publishing the data accompany the ransom. In some cases your data is encrypted by the malicious software thereby leaving your data essentially lost or stolen until you agree to make the ransom payment.

In many cases the ransomware attacks are executed using a Trojan that looks like a legitimate file that a user is tricked into downloading or opening – usually in the form of an email attachment.

The types of ransomware attacks are evolving however as seen in one recent example, “WannaCry”, that traveled automatically between PC’s without user interaction.

Most recently, in 2016, a new form of ransomware, called Petya, came onto the scene that targeted primarily Microsoft windows-based systems. The Petya ransomware infects the master boot record on a PC’s hard drive preventing it from booting and holds the users data hostage.

Ransomware affects both consumers and businesses and you NEED to protect your data!
